THE PENTACLE
MEN'S GUEST INVITATIONAL
|
The annual Men’s Invitational, “The Pentacle”, took place Wednesday, July 19 - Friday, July 21. Three days of gorgeous weather greeted the members and their invited guests from all over the country. The optional Wednesday Practice Round took place and was awarded a coveted spot in the Friday Championship Shootout which was won by Glen Turner and his guest Andy Makar. The members and their guests then turned their competitive attentions to the five 9-hole matches that took place over Thursday and Friday.
Thursday morning started with a fabulous breakfast buffet before heading out for the 9am shotgun start. After the first two matches on the Player Course, the players took over the Hunt Club for an incredible lunch before heading back out for the third 9-hole match of the day.
Friday morning another breakfast buffet led into the final two 9-hole matches on the Palmer Course as the field vied to win the most points in their six-team flights over the two days of five 9-hole matches for a spot in the Championship Shootout.
The Championship Shootout was very exciting as 12 teams started on hole #16. After all the teams played the first Shootout hole, 6 teams were eliminated and 6 teams played the 2nd Shootout hole, the beautiful Palmer #17. After this hole was completed, 3 more teams were eliminated for the final 3 teams to play hole #18 which was comprised of Steve Giffel & guest Fred Weigandt, Don Parker & guest Mike Fahey, and Greg Hammes & guest Charles Fellows competing for the Pentacle Championship. Steve and Fred ran into some small difficulties both making 6’s for net 5’s giving them 3rd place. That turned it into a 2-team race for the Pentacle Championship.
Don’s guest Mike hit two shots and was just short and right of the green while Greg was just short of the front greenside bunker in two shots. Those two would provide a dramatic and exciting finish. After a chip that ran 20 feet past the hole, Mike was left with a tricky downhill left-to-right putt for a chance at victory. Greg hit a nice pitch over the bunker to 18 feet below the hole. Mike putted first and struck a perfect putt that rolled in the center of the cup at perfect speed for a 4 net 3. That left the door open for Greg to roll in his 18-footer to tie and go into extra holes.
Greg’s putt barely slid by the left edge of the cup giving him a 5 net 4 securing second place and crowned Don Parker and Mike Fahey the 2023 Pentacle Champions. Thank you to the entire staff for putting on a spectacular event and all who participated.
